Just in time for tonites Larrys Larrys Larrys party at the 201. A interview by the Daily Dose
Years before the recent surge in Rhode Island nightlife, there was a vibrant scene in the Ocean State that could definitely compare with the hotbeds of nightlife culture like New York and Chicago. Back then the small state had numerous large clubs, and several iconic figures
ran highly successfully nights. One of the true innovators of that area, Larry has returned to the Providence nightlife scene to once again school us on how to party. His highly anticipated second
installment of Larrys Larrys Larrys will once again hit the 201 tonight, Friday January 29th. We had a chance to catch up with Larry, who is getting ready for the party in his Swiss ski chalet.
DailyDose: Larry, it looks like Providence has you back as a nightlife staple after your very successfully first party last November?
Larry: Thanks for your kind words. We had a real good start, and the overwhelming excitement from the crowd shows me that Disco is still alive and kicking. I also made sure to bring with me the best of the best, and Disco Khan, Kaiser Disco, and Grandmaster Gaddafi will be back for the party on Friday. Not to forget the Larry’s Gold Dancers who always are a delight.
DailyDose: You have always been seen as an innovator in the nightlife scene. I read that you started using disco balls back in the early 10′s before everyone else, and you are also associated with bringing the original Studio 54 soundsystem to Providence.
Larry: The disco ball story is pretty funny. My cousin Vinny had a Fiorucci glitter shirt and he also liked to eat pasta. So he stretched that shirt out when he wore it dancing. One day I was playing around with a spotlight and realized that Vinny was reflecting the light all over the dance floor. We took the fabric, wrapped it over a basketball, and glued it on a turntable. It worked great.
Later on we had a couple made by a jewelry factory in Fall River. They took off, and I ran a disco ball manufacturing company for a while.
DailyDose: Fascinating times back then, how do you compare the nightlife today to the early beginnings back then? Some people recently have tried to imitate Larrys Larrys Larrys, but have not been well received from the nightlife community.
Larry: People would dress up much more back then. Everybody had a certain look, a signature appearance. The dancers all were very serious about it. They would exercise their new moves all week and show up Saturday to impress the crowd. We are trying to bring that area back in some regards. Kaiser, Khan and Gaddafi are really sharp dressers, and the Gold Dancers have nice outfits. Not to mention, they know how to dance! About these guys that try to be like Larrys Larrys Larrys, look there can only be one Rolls Royce, there can only be one John Travolta. That’s all I have to say about that.
DailyDose: Thank you for the interview, we are looking forward to Tonight.
